What Are DTF Transfers?

In case you didn’t know, DTF stands for Direct to Film. It’s a printing process where designs are printed onto a special film using a DTF printer, then coated with an adhesive powder. Once the print is cured, the film is ready to press directly onto fabric using a heat press. This is why it is a ready to press transfer.

Unlike other methods (like HTV or sublimation), DTF can be used on 100% cotton, polyester, blends, fleece, canvas, and more. There’s no pretreatment required at all.

How Does the DTF Printing Process Work?🛠️

First, create your design using a professional graphic software like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or CorelDRAW or a beginner-friendly, intuitive tool like Canva. Save the image with a transparent background (usually PNG format), set your resolution to at least 300 DPI, and use the CMYK color mode for the best print results.

Second, print your design using a DTF printer. DTF printers use specialized pigment inks (CMYK + White) to print first the color layer, then a layer of white ink behind it for opacity on dark garments.

Apply DTF powder (hot melt adhesive) to the printed film while the ink is still wet. The powder sticks only to the inked areas. Gently shake off the excess powder.

• A heat gun (for small batches, less consistent)

The powder will melt and fuse into a soft adhesive layer.

Cool and store the film in a flat, dry area. Once cured, the film is now a “ready-to-press DTF transfer”. These can be pressed immediately or stored for weeks without losing quality, as long as they’re kept away from humidity and heat.

Press the transfer onto your garment using a heat press at 300–320°F (150–160°C) for 10–15 seconds, depending on fabric type. Use medium to firm pressure. After pressing, allow it to cool slightly before peeling (cold peel or warm peel depending on your film type).
